Devereux NY Grants Update

In compliance with the terms of a $35,000 grant received from The Dyson Foundation of Millbrook, New York, Devereux New York demolished a dilapidated structure on its property.

The 19th century-era home had been in disrepair for several years and posed a significant safety hazard on the Red Hook campus. Over the past several weeks, asbestos siding, linoleum flooring and window caulking was removed, after which the Red Hook Fire Department conducted training exercises within the structure. On December 2, the building was leveled and debris was removed form the site. Come springtime, the area will be re-graded and re-seeded.

In other grant news, Devereux New York received $5,000 from the Alcoa Foundation to fund a Bicycling for Better Health Program which will get underway Spring of 2006. During the spring of 2005, a bicycling club was formed, but student interest far exceeded the equipment available, hence the need for additional bikes for students. Goals for the club include increased physical activity and self-esteem; greater community integration through involvement with local cycling clubs; and a respect for proper bike safety and necessary maintenance of the equipment.
